The benefits of electronic data transmission in transport orders are clear, yet they are often not fully recognised in a broader context.
Transport order information is still frequently shared in paper format, even though practice and research show that effective and high-quality logistics can only be built on electronic data exchange between all parties. For example, a handwritten consignment note may cause misunderstandings right at the beginning of the supply chain, resulting in unnecessary work, errors, and delays. Paper-based information is also not available in real time.
A video (video in Finnish) commissioned by the Finnish Transport and Logistics Association (Logistiikkayritysten Liitto Ry) highlights how standardised parcel labels, printed from electronic orders, support the entire logistics process.
The key benefits of electronic ordering include:
Fewer errors
- Complete and accurate data throughout the transport chain eliminates mistakes in route planning
- The right transport capacity is directed to the right place
- Drivers have access to all necessary delivery information
- Standardised waybills and parcel labels contain all required data, easily read using barcode scanners
Improved efficiency
- Fewer manual steps in the order process
- Enables consolidation of shipments, efficient route management, tracking, and optimisation: lower transport costs
- Reduced environmental impact from transport
Higher quality and continuous development
- Better service experience for the end customer – a win-win-win for all parties
- Builds a strong foundation for future logistics services and innovations
